Elder David Parker II, Pastor

ZION'S History

In 1966, Bishop David Parker was led of the Lord to the Pastorate. The church began with 18 people in a rented storefront on the corner of South and Washington Streets. It was a small place, but filled with the glory of God. The church began to grow and it was certain we would have to move soon. There, God gave him a vision that would enable the church to raise enough money within three years to purchase a larger edifice. The word of the Lord came to pass and miraculously within three years the church had raised better than $50,000, and a beautiful church was purchased on Columbia Avenue in North Akron for $30,000. Fifteen years later, in 1985, another miracle took place. A small congregation looking for a church home had set their sights on our newly remolded church and was willing to pay five times what we had paid for it. Of course, this was an offer too good to refuse. But where would we go? Pastor Parker advised the church to pray for the direction of the Lord. The Lord answered prayer for we learned that the property that we are now in was up for sale and a smooth transition was made from the Columbia Avenue Church to the beautiful church just one mile away at 10 West Tallmadge Avenue.

Sunday December 10, 1985 found the membership, neighbors and friends of Zion moving again in a huge motorcade to their new location at 10 West Tallmadge Avenue where they have remained the past 26 years.
Since being on West Tallmadge, the church has acquired approximately 5 acres of land around the church, and two brick homes on the west side of the church. In 2001 the mortgage on the church was liquidated. Recently, an elevator lift was installed for the handicapped. Zion houses the YMCA Child Development Center, Life Line Ministries (a Christian drug and alcohol prevention and cure program), and serves hot breakfast to the community each Sunday morning.
Bishop Parker imparted this vision to his son, Pastor David Parker, II, retiring in 2010. He envisions the following community services on our footprint:

  • Community Health Services Center
  • Zion Community Development Corporation
  • Computer Lab
  • Family Services Center
